Česka Beseda Sarajevo Christmas Party
On 16 December 2017 Česká Beseda Sarajevo organised Christmas and New Year party at the St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery. This year the catering was professional and on a high level, and the invitation of the President Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka was responded by a number of guests and members of partner associations. Deputy Czech Ambassador, paní Klára von Kriegsheim Kadlecová, enhanced the party, accompanied by her daughter Miša, and our dear language instructor, professor Jana Skoumalová, also joined us. Special event at every Christmas Party is a raffle which was conducted by Silvana Martina and Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka this time.

Česká Beseda Sarajevo at the reception at the Official Residence
Ambassador of Czech Republic, His Excellency Jakub Skalník invited krajani to a traditional party at his residence this year, too. Members of Česka Beseda associations and associations of Bosnian and Czech friendship from both BiH entities gathered at the residence. Members of Česka Beseda from Banja Luka by their performance of the Czech anthem gave their contribution to the ceremony. Pan Jakub Skalník, too, joined them in singing occasional songs, together with other participants. In good spirits and enjoying the rich food offered, one must not forget the presents. President of Česka Beseda Sarajevo, Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka, gave pani Skalník as a gift, a specially made 2018 Czech calendar. The participants received sad news. In her address, Paní Klara von Kriegsheim Kadlecová, Deputy Ambassador, said that it was her last party with krajans, because her tenure of office was coming to an end.

Human Rights Day at the BiH Parliament
Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka, President of Česka Beseda Sarajevo, attended the presentation of Peace Award at the BiH Parliament for the purpose marking of International Human Rights Day on 10 December for a person or a school, given by the Peace Building Network. In the category of schools the award was given to the Osman Nuri Hadžić Primary School from Sarajevo, with which we have been cooperating for several years now, and the other nominees for the award were, among others, Smilja Mrđa – History Teacher at the mentioned school and the President of the Association.

Česká beseda at the Christmas Fair
Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka and Vesna Malić represented Česka Beseda Sarajevo at the Christmas Fair held on 9 and 10 December 2017 in the Little Gallery of St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery in Bistrik. At the Česka Beseda stand, with appropriate holiday offer, there were also leaflets promoting tourism in the Czech Republic.

Round Table within Minority Fest
On 5 December 2017 within this year's Minority Fest organised by the Council of National Minorities of Sarajevo canton, a round table was held on the topic:’Social and Political participation of national minorities in BiH’. The host of the round table was the European Union Delegation to BiH. The meeting was attended by representatives of EU, embassies to BiH, local community, Council of National Minorities of BiH, Council of National Minorities of FBiH, Council of National Minorities of RS and representatives of international organisational and non-governmental organisations dealing with issues of national minorities. Participants were addressed, among others, by Jan Šnaidauf from the EU Delegation, and Mrs. Klára von Kriegsheim Kadlecová, Czech Deputy Ambassador to BiH was also present. As a representative of the Czech national minority the meeting was attended by Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka, President of Česka Beseda Sarajevo, who was at the same time a representative of the Association, together with its Vice President for Culture, Leona Sabolek.

Day of National Minorities of Sarajevo Canton
Česká Beseda Sarajevo took part in the Minority Fest – Day of National Minorities of Sarajevo Canton within promotion of culinary traditions of national minorities which took place at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo on 25 November 2017. Thanking to Jovanki Manzalović Šalaka and Vesna Malić sweet and salty dishes could be found on the Česka Beseda stand, including Czech beer Kozel and Becherovka, all nicely decorated and supported by advertising material. Apart from Czechs, Hungarians, Poles, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Romanians, Ruthenians and ANZ.

On 23 November 2017 at the Academy of Fine Arts within the festival program a premiere of a Hungarian film took place, this year's Oscar winner in the category of short films. The presentation was attended also by Hungarian Ambassador to BiH. The representatives of the HUM, a Hungarian association of citizens addressed the audience, including members of Česka Beseda Sarajevo, MINDENKI – SING – PJEVAJ!

Česká Beseda on Statehood Day
Česka Beseda Sarajevo members responded to invitation of the Embassy of Czech Republic to celebrate the Statehood Day of Czech Republic together with other associations on 28 October. They were kindly welcomed on the premises of the European Union Delegation in Sarajevo by the Deputy Ambassador Klára von Kriegsheim Kadlecová on 25 October 2017. Slovak Republic also celebrated the joint holiday and national holidays were also marked by other two Višegrad Group Member States, Hungary and Poland. Many diplomats and distinguished guests were addressed by the Hungarian Ambassador, Négyesi József as a representative of the state presiding the Višegrad Four. He was accompanied by Czech Ambassador Jakub Skalník, Polish Ambassador Andrzej Krawczyk and Slovakian Ambassador Ján Pšenica whose tenure of the office in Bosnia and Herzegovina is coming to an end. Their joint message reflected friendship and support to peoples of our country. Mr. Denis Zvizdić, Chair of the BiH Council of Ministers joined them on the stage. The celebration continued with rich offer of national dishes and drinks of celebrating countries.

Osman Nuri Hadžić Primary School
On 25 October representatives of Česka Beseda Sarajevo, Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka and Dario Frimel, in cooperation with the History Teacher, Smilja Mrđa from Osman Nuri Hadžić Primary School, held an interactive and entertaining class. Students of VIII1 class put pieces together of a puzzle showing pictures of famous Sarajevo buildings and had an opportunity to learn more about their designer, a Czech architect Karel Pařík, and about Czech language, culture and cuisine.

National Museum of BiH
On 22 October 2017 members of Česka Beseda Sarajevo gathered at the National Museum of BiH to see an exhibition dedicated to one of the most distinguished pioneers of photography in Bosnia and Herzegovina – František Topič, a Czech who spent a great part of his service at the National Museum of BiH, first as an archive clerk, and then as a librarian, secretary and a photographer. Around one hundred photos were displayed at the exhibition taken in different parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, showing landscapes of BiH, national costumes and culture of living of our peoples at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. A photographer monograph ‘Between two Empires: Bosnia and Herzegovina at the photographs of František Topič 1885-1919’ is a selection of the most interesting, previously unpublished Topič's photographs and at the same time the most important publishing effort of the National Museum of BiH in the past few years.

CZECH LANGUAGE IN SARAJEVO-announcement

Saint Václav's Day – Česka Beseda's Day
On 27 September 2017 Česká Beseda Sarajevo officially marked its day – Saint Václav's Day on the premises of St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery in Bistrik. The President of the Association Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka welcomed all participants and the guests, and briefly reflected on 21 years of work of the renewed Česka Beseda Sarajevo. Then the Vice Presidnet for Culture read out her essay Greater than Legend about life of Saint Václav and his importance wto the Czech people.. A young Beseda member, Dario Frimel, prepared a very interesting video-presentation from his study trip to Dobruška this year. Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka gave as a gift to the Deputy Ambassador paní Klára von Kriegsheim Kadlecovoj a book of recipes U slast! – Pochutnejte si! which was published by the renewed Česká Beseda Sarajevo to mark its tenth anniversary. Among the guests there was also Mrs.Danka Savić who finished her successful tenure of office of the Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Czech Republic and already our old guest General Jovan Divjak. Varja Nikolić attended the ceremony for the first time, who was in charge of the Centre for Healthy Aging and with whom Beseda had successful cooperation, as well as with associations of national minorities whose representatives regularly respond to invitations and mingling after completion of programs on the Monastery's premises.

Česká beseda on the Czech Television
The Czech Television crew from Ostrava consisting of the editor Marta Růžičková, cameraman Krunoslav Kiko Keteleš and sound man Otokar Oto Mandelik visited Sarajevo to film a report about Česka Beseda Sarajevo for the series Babylon. On 18 September 2017, Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka, Leona Sabolek, Dubravka Hadžikadunić and Dario Frimel spoke about Beseda and themselves in the compound of Botanical Garden of the National Museum in Sarajevo. Some poems were also read out. Dario Frimel read out the translations of Šantić's Emina into Czech language. Leona Sabolek read out her poem How to leave, and Dubravka Hadžikadunić its translation into the Czech language. Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka and the TV crew visited also the Karlo Pařik's Square, a Sarajevo builder, about whom a daily Oslobođenje published a feuilleton. The feuilleton was prepared basedd on the book Architect Karel Pařik , by the authors Jiří Kuděle, Branke.

Continuation of activities
After summer break on 13 September 2017 Česká Beseda Sarajevo continued its activities. The lessons at the Czech language course were held first conducted by the language instructor Jana Skoumalová for the attendees, which was followed by mingling in the Czech Corner. This time the attendees tried a Czech traditional cake 'trdelnik' which has been lately made in Sarajevo, too.

Česka Beseda Sarajevo visits Nova Ves
On 19 August members of Česka Beseda Sarajevo visited Česka Beseda Nova Ves and on that occasion laid flowers and lit candles to Czech women who lost their lives in the Second World War. Apart from the hospitable hosts representatives of Česka Beseda Associations from Slavonski Brod and Mačino Brdo also participated in the gathering, as well as the representatives of SUBNOR from Srbac. The gathering at the church and the cemetery was followed by mingling of participants in the Czech Centre.

Czech Language Department
A two-semester course titled Czech Language and Literature was attended by 15 individuals - students and other interested candidates. At the end of the academic year 2016/2017, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jakub Skalník, and Czech Language Professor, Jana Skoumalová, awarded certificates of successful completion of the Czech Language course to the candidates.

Pařik's Jubilees
June 6th of 2017 marked the 75th anniversary of the death of the builder of Sarajevo, architect Karl Pařik, and July 4th this year also marked the 160th anniversary of his birth. On 16 June, Česká beseda Sarajevo organized the traditional commemoration of this “Czech by birth and citizen of Sarajevo by choice” at St. Michael's Cemetery in Sarajevo. In addition to the large number of Beseda members and guests, the commemoration of this great architect was also attended by the Deputy Ambassador of the Czech Republic, paní Klára von Kriegsheim Kadlecová; Check Language Professor, Jana Skoumalová, and the President of the Assembly of the Bosnian-Czech Friendship Association Snješka, Željko Majstorović. President of Česka beseda, Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka, talked about his life and work. Before leaving the cemetery, most of the guests visited the grave of another meritorious Czech national - dr. Karl Bayer. A get-together was organized after the commemoration.

“Discus Thrower” in Tuzla 17 June 2017
 
On the occasion of the anniversary of the death of prof.dr. Mirko Dušek (1930-2016), a Czech by origin, President of Česka beseda Sarajevo, Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka, laid flowers at the sculpture „Discus Thrower” in the park near the School of Music in Tuzla. This prominent conductor and music pedagogue from Tuzla, who also used to be an athlete in his youth, served as a model for this sculpture made by his fellow citizen and the city’s first academic sculptor Franjo Leder.

This year, Česká beseda Sarajevo traditionally congratulated the St. Anthony of Padua Day to our dear friends - Franciscans from the St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery in Bistrik, Sarajevo. The Franciscan Church of St. Anthony has traditionally been considered as the house of prayer of all citizens of Sarajevo. For a long time, the area of the city on the right bank of the Miljacka River, where this monastery and church are located, was called Latinluk. It was named after the members of the Catholic, Roman or Latin church. In 1652, around 200 Catholic families lived in this Latinluk. Česká beseda at the Center for Healthy Aging
 
On 31 May 2017, Česká beseda Sarajevo was a guest of the Center for Healthy Aging in the Centar Municipality which is successfully managed by Varja Nikolić. President Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka greeted the numerous beneficiaries of the Center and then gave the floor to Ljuba Ristić who, in her original way, presented South Moravia, folk costumes and customs of this region to the audience illustrating the presentation with video materials. A mannequin dressed in the folk costume of the Brno area was brought for this occasion. The lecture was followed by a get-together with snacks and refreshments from Bihać Brewery.

Exhibition and Excursion to Mostar
 
In cooperation with the Citizens' Association Architect Karel Pařík, a Bosnian-Czech Friendship Association from Mostar, Česká beseda Sarajevo took to Mostar the 15th exhibition from the cycle “Czechs in Sarajevo – Our 20 Years”, which was displayed in the National Museum on the occasion of the celebration of the last year's jubilee. At the same time, the trip to Mostar was used to organize Beseda's popular annual excursion.
Members of Česka beseda and their guests were received at the Puppet Theater by the hosts led by the President of the Association Arhitekt Karel Pařík, Alena Gološeva who moderated the program organized at the Small Scene of the Puppet Theatre. The audience was greeted by the Deputy Czech Ambassador, paní Klára von Kriegsheim Kadlecová. The program included the screening of the short documentary by Česka beseda “PROBUĐENE LUTKE“ /Awakened Dolls/, Šantić's Emina was read by Ljuba Ristić in Czech and Sidika Manjgo in the original and they were accompanied by the accordion player Snježana Dujmović. Petar Mikić from the Music Centre Pavarotti presented his piano mastery. Alena Golaševa presented certificates of appreciation to the Embassy of the Czech Republic, the Puppet Theatre and Česka beseda Sarajevo. The youngest ones – Miša and Petar, were not forgotten during the exchange of gifts. Gifts presented to them by the President of the Česka beseda Sarajevo, Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka, were related to the popular movie puppet - Kašpárek. Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka opened the exhibition “Our 20 Years”. After the sightseeing, a get-together with accordion music and songs was organized. After that, the group visited the old bridge and had lunch at the Spiritual and Education Centre Emaus in Potoci, where the guests were warmly received by the Director Tanja Raič Tarčuki. The excursionists spent the remaining time before their trip back to Sarajevo in the pleasant atmosphere of the Caritas House of Meetings where they refreshed themselves with non-alcoholic beverages from the Bihać Brewery.

Czech Movie Tiger Theory
 
Members of Česka beseda Sarajevo responded to the invitation received from the Ambassador of the Czech Republic and on 25 May 2017 viewed the Czech movie Tiger Theory about modern life. This humorous movie with beautiful camera shots was screened as part of the European Film Day at the Meeting Point Cinema. Ambassador of the Czech Republic, pan Jakub Skalník, addressed the audience before the screening of the movie.

Česká beseda Sarajevo Visited the Karl Bayer's Grave
 
On 12 April 2017, Česka beseda organized a commemoration of dr. Karel Bayer at the St. Michaels's Cemetery in Sarajevo. On the date of the death of this prominent doctor and great philanthropist, member of Beseda, Dario Frimel, laid flowers on the family tomb of the Bayer family.
Dr. Karel Bayer was the manager of the first modern hospital in Sarajevo, the first President of the Association of Medical Doctors in BiH and a street in Sarajevo was supposed to be named after him while he was still alive. He died at the dawn of the World War I, on 12 April 1914. He was saved from a 100-year oblivion by the writer and lexicographer Valerijan Žujo who researched the work and life of this great Czech. Commemoration was opened by the President of Česka beseda, Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka. Deputy Czech Ambassador, paní Klára von Kriegsheim Kadlecová expressed her support; writer Valerijan Žujo talked about the research for the monograph dedicated to Karl Bayer; and the painter Mirza Ibrahimpašić brought dr. Karl Bayer's person to life in a portrait.

Electoral Convention
 
Electoral convention of the Association of Citizens of Czech Origin Česká beseda Sarajevo was held on 29 March 2017 at the gallery of the Saint Anthony's Franciscan Monastery in Bistrik. All items of the agenda were approved (Minutes of the previous Assembly meeting, Activity Report for the period between two Assembly meetings, Work Plan for 2017, financial reports for 2015 and 2016, and Supervisory Board reports). In addition to that, the convention elected the management of the Association, members of the Management Board, Supervisory Board and the Court of Honor for a period of four years. After the end of the Electoral Convention, a small get-together with snacks and refreshments was organized for the members in attendance.

Cooperation
 
On 15 March 2017, an exhibition of photographs and documents titled “OTKUD ITALIJANI U BiH?” /What are Italians doing in BiH/ at the GM Gallery (Gallery Mandžić) in Tuzla. The exhibition was organized by the Association of Citizens of Italian Origin RINO ZANDONAI from Tuzla. The President of this Association invited members of Česka beseda Sarajevo, as members of an ethnic minority group in BiH, to attend this event. On behalf of Česka beseda the exhibition was attended by Jovanka Manzalovć Šalaka and Dario Frimel. The fact that Czechs and Italians in BiH have always been close is supported by a document displayed at the exhibition about a joint band formed at the beginning of the 20th century in Tuzla.

Czech Corner in March
 
The Czech Corner in March was organized on 8 March 2017 in the celebratory atmosphere of the International Women's Day. Member Vesna Malić prepared her famous cakes for everyone, there was Becherovka too, Jovanka's liqueur and cookies from Holland, tea and flowers of course. Members of Česka beseda were joined by the Czech Language Professor, Jana Skoumalová, together with students from the Czech Republic currently studying at the Sarajevo University.

Start of the Czech Language Course
 
Czech language course for members of Česka beseda Sarajevo started on 8 March 2017 on the premises of the St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery in Bistrik. The Course is taught by Jana Skoumalová, Professor of Czech Language at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo. The language course is attended by: Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka, Karmela Smolik, Zdravko Vobornik, Slavenka Vobornik, Gordana Vobornik, Dubravka Hadžikadunić, Duša Černi Kulenović and Leona Sabolek. The first meeting dedicated to practical arrangements. The course will be organized in two classes to be held twice a month. For the next class, scheduled for 22 March 2017, the Professor will bring copied texts from textbooks for all candidates which will be used as materials for learning the Czech language.

National Museum, 8 March 2017
 
On the occasion of the International Women's Day, the National Museum of BiH welcomed all ladies with the free museum entry and all visitors to the Museum were able to enjoy various exponents. Blooming saffrons in the museum complex were a symbolic gift for the ladies. The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the most representative and the oldest scientific, educational and cultural institution in our country. The Museum complex consists of four pavilions connected by the entry terrace and a botanical garden occupying the central area. The entire complex was designed by the architect Karlo Paržik (Karel Pařík), the then Chief Architectural Advisor of the National Government, who was also the Chief Supervisor of construction works. Česka beseda also visited the Museum on that occasion and presented the Director, Mirsad Sijarić, with a postage stamp with the image of Karl Paržik as a token of good cooperation.

Presidency, 1 March 2017
 
Members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bakir Izetbegović and Dragan Čović, addressed the guests at the gala reception organized at the Presidency building on the occasion of the BiH Independence Day. The reception was attended by high officials of the international community, representatives of the diplomatic corps, academic community and public life in BiH, including representatives of national minorities, Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka on behalf of Česka beseda and Bruno Palestra on behalf of the Association of Citizens of Italian Origin in Sarajevo.

Working Visit to Mostar
 
On 14 February 2017, President of Česka Beseda, Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka, Vice-President for Culture, Leona Sabolek, and member Ljubica Ristić visited the Citizen's Association „Arhitekt Karel Pařík“, Association of Czech-Bosnian Friendship from Mostar. The Association's premises are located at the Puppet Theater which has been reconstructed by the Czech Republic. Cooperation between the two associations was agreed with the President of the Association, Alen Gološov. The start of the cooperation should be marked in May by the exhibition “Our 20 Years” initially organized by Česka beseda at the National Museum on the occasion of 20th anniversary of reopening.

Management Board Meeting and “Working Get-Together” of Beseda Members
 
Management Board of Česka beseda Sarajevo held its plenary session on 8 February 2017 during the Czech Corner. The Board discussed the work plan and electoral convention to be held this coming spring. A working get-together with the members was organized after the session. In addition to the 2017 Work Plan, the Board also discussed the application for a study visit to Dobruška for a Czech language course. A Czech language course will be organized for the members of Česka beseda on the premises of St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery. The course will be held by the Czech Language Professor, Jana Skoumalová. Beseda plans to establish cooperation with the Center for Healthy Aging in the Sarajevo Centar Municipality and try to organize a trip to the Czech Republic with the Center. Ljuba Ristić volunteered to hold a lecture on folk costumes and customs of the Czech South Moravia as part of the cooperation.
