Visit to Mačino Brdo Česka Beseda

On 7 and 8 June 2013 we visited Česka Beseda from Mačino Brdo. The goal of this visit was to review the library holdings which belonged to the Česka Beseda from Sarajevo as far back as 1957 which, after cessation of our work, was taken over by the then most active Beseda from Mačino Brdo. To our knowledge the library had approximately 2000 books. A small team, Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka, Ljuba Ristić and Kryštof Bachmann, a foreign-language instructor at the Faculty of Arts for Czech Language, and lately, a member of our Beseda, managed to do an extremely hard job and to make a video recording of 360 books (approximately 1/3 of the total library holdings) saved in the Culture Center in Mačino Brdo in the premises of their Beseda. Unfortunately, the books are in very poor condition, as they had fallen into decay, and because of the fact that during the war they were not properly protected. Our host Emil Boček, the President of the Mačino Brdo Beseda with other members managed to save from decay the library holdings to a certain extent. The issue was immediately raised as to how to permanently protect the books, and the answer was that without engagement of the wider community and financing it would not be possible!!!

They also got familiar with Sarajevo Beseda which dates as far back as 1905 in the capital, which was presented by the President of the Association, Jovanka Manzalović Šalaka, as well as the postcards dedicated to the Czech architect, Karel Pařik, promoted by the Vice-president for Culture, Leona Sabolek. After the official part of the visit, the guests tried the “ inevitable” pie and Sarajevo beer, and sang the Czech song “Ach, synku, synku“. Eventually, the guests were given, with the Association's journals and badges, the book of significant and valuable contents Directory-Address book of the Czechs in Sarajevo in 1910, and the recorded CD about their short visit to «krajani».
